Out of the Salt Shaker

22 Jul

Several people wrote in asking if I would show some more photos of the “Salt Shaker” technique.

When I first discussed this technique the other day, it was in the context of making accent wool being used to create the look of worn paint.  Here are 3 completed pieces of that process.  They will just be used here and there, mixed with unaltered white wool, to add some patina.

Hitomi, who is always quick in trying out the thing we talk about, also  sent in some of the pieces that she made.  Notice that the one on the left is “undisturbed” while the one on the right seems to have been moved around before the dye set in the wool.

I’ll illustrate with some other pieces I did last night.

I used off the bolt yellow wool for this experiment.

I sprinkled on plum, red, blue and gold was added.  If left undisturbed, the dye would have just gone into the wool.

However, I picked up one end and let the colors run.   If I had been really desirous of maintaining the look of this wool, I would have taken it out of the pan and wrapped it in a foil packet as described the other day.  As I was pressed for time, I did not go to that trouble which means that my end result ran even more than shown here as it simmered in the pan.

Remember, if cutting and hooking this wool, a lot of the color activity would be lost, unless it was hooked sequentially.  However, hooked in single strips, it would make very interesting veins or highlights for a myriad of motifs.
